Morpho Tower.....~A magnetic fluid breahing in a spiral tower~
A liquid sculpture by Sachiko Kodama & Yasushi Miyajima

A projection emerges from the surface,
many spikes stick out and gather as if they are alive..... ....
Black liquid that reacts to magnetic flux....
when I saw this material for the first time,
I found it's strange shapes and movements very confusing.
It may have looked familiar to people used to watching morphing computer graphics and hyper-realistic effective images that exist only mathematical form.
However, these phenomena were appearing right there in front of me in the real world. =)))
Still, a magnetic fluid cannot be manipulated as freely as computer graphics.
Their forms cannot correspond the physical laws of magnetism and gravity.
I always wonder at how the shapes created in this magnetic fluid be like plant or animal forms.
What does this looks like?
= a water lily?? O.o
What does the shape of thorns remind you?
= a hedgedog?
The movement of the liquid makes them seem living, dynamic, and sometimes almost aggressively erotic.
Anyone can make a moving, interactive figure.
A beautiful artifact which has never been seen before.

The magnetic fluid is a black liquid reacts to a magnetic field.
Early 1960s, NASA has been developed for the space program.
Currently, magnetic fluid is applied to the speaker, and has been used as a sealant for semiconductor manufacturing equipment and vacuum seal.
Sachiko Kodama (Sachiko Kodama)
Morpho Towers is an installation art that consists of 2 ferrofluid sculptures that moves naturally to music.
The 2 spiral towers stand on a large plate that hold ferrofluid.
The body of the tower was made by a new technique called ''ferrofluid sculpture'' invented by Sachiko, which enables artists to create dynamic sculptures with fluid materials.
This technique uses one electromagnet, and it's iron core is extended and sculpted.
The ferrofluid covers the sculpted surface of 3-dimentional iron shape that was made on an electronic NC lathe.
The movement of the spikes in the fluid is controlled dynamically on the surface by adjusting the power of electromagnet.
